Camping, pub quizzes and dress-ups – $6,000 raised for our MS nurses

Diagnosed with MS in 2019, Anita fundraises for the MS Society as a way of saying ‘thanks’ for the support she receives.

Five years ago, avid camper Anita woke up one morning while away on a trip unable to see out of her right eye.

Scared and confused, she made an appointment to see her doctor when she returned home. That visit turned out to be one of many to see doctors and specialists until finally, six months later, Anita received a multiple sclerosis diagnosis.

Thinking back to the way her doctor broke the news, “still blows my mind,” Anita says.

“I was just in shock because it was the eye doctor that told me I had MS, and she just said it exactly like that.”

Anita says she is grateful for the support from the MS Society SA & NT and to give back as a way of showing her appreciation.

“They’re always there when I need them, I know they’re just a phone call away,” she says.

Anita and her husband Mike, who are the owners of The Dirt Off Road Campers in Mount Barker, together with their staff, decided to turn their annual camping trip with their customers into an opportunity to raise funds for the MS Society.

“My staff actually suggested it because they see how much the MS Society helps me,” Anita says.

This year, Anita and Mike went away on their tenth trip with more than 70 “happy campers” for a weekend of off-road camping and fundraising.

While away, the campers got involved in a pub quiz, silent auction, raffles and even a dress-up night, with all proceeds supporting the MS Society’s specialist MS nurses.

“The MS Society has always been there for me when I’ve needed them, and I’m happy to do my bit to give back,” Anita says.

More than $6,000 was raised.

Thank you, Anita, we are so grateful!
