ndis

What is ndis?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides lifelong support to Australians living with disability. The nationally funded scheme is a new way of providing support and services to help people live well and achieve their goals.

The scheme gives you more control over the decisions that impact the way you live your life including how and when you access services, and the flexibility to choose service providers. It works by creating a plan that provides the right support for you based on your goals and needs. NDIS plans are reviewed regularly to respond to your changing needs over time.

The NDIS funds reasonable and necessary supports related to your disability that will help you to pursue your goals, increase independence, and participate in social activities and employment. These supports are based on your individual needs and goals. The NDIS does not fund day-to-day living costs such as groceries and rent.

Services and supports funded under the NDIS can include support with household tasks, personal care, physiotherapy, recreation, equipment, home modifications and more.

If you are under the age of 65 and your disability impacts the way you live your life, you may be eligible to access the NDIS. To become an NDIS participant, the NDIA will require a range of information to determine your eligibility.

If your request to access the NDIS is approved, you will have a ‘planning meeting’ to determine your individual support requirements with an NDIA planner. This planning meeting will determine the supports and services included in your plan, so it is important to be prepared.

Once your NDIS plan is approved, you can now start to use it. As a registered NDIS provider, the MS Society SA & NT can help you understand your new plan and implement it.

Your NDIS plan will be reviewed by the NDIA every 12 months. This review is the opportunity to check how your supports are working for you, and that they are helping you progress and achieve your goals.

How we can help

How we can help

The NDIS is a new way of providing lifelong support and services to people living with disability. MS Society SA & NT can help you navigate the application process, create your NDIS plan and implement your NDIS plan to ensure you have access to the supports and services you need to achieve your goals.

MS Society SA & NT can help you understand the NDIS eligibility requirements and help you complete the NDIS Access Request Form. We can then provide follow up support and liaise with the NDIA until your eligibility has been determined. This service is available face-to-face or over the phone.

Your NDIS planning meeting will determine the supports and services included in your plan, so it is important to plan and be prepared. MS Society SA & NT can work with you to create a pre-planning document which outlines the specific services you would like to include in your plan.

Together, we identify your needs and goals and help you understand the types of services and supports that are available through the NDIS, and how they could be of benefit to you. This document will help the planner when creating your plan and ensure nothing important gets left out.

We understand that you may have questions when you first receive your NDIS plan. MS Society SA & NT can help you understand the services and supports that have been included in your plan and how you can start to implement it. We can connect you with service providers in your local area and help you with the ongoing management of your plan.

Your NDIS plan may include Support Coordination as one of your funded supports. Our Support Coordinators can help you get the most from your NDIS plan with a personalised service tailored to your individual needs and goals.

The MS Society SA & NT are specialists in multiple sclerosis and have an in depth understanding of the impact your MS symptoms can have on your everyday life and goals. Our knowledge of the local community services and care services available means that we will connect you with service providers who understand the specific challenges that MS presents.

Connecting you with services and supports

Your NDIS plan will outline the different services and supports that you need to live well and achieve your goals. These services are funded under your NDIS plan. MS Society SA & NT can connect you with service providers in your local area that are personalised to your needs.

If you’re not eligible for the NDIS

If you don’t meet the NDIS access requirements, MS Society SA & NT can provide information and referral for other supports and services available to suit your needs.
